CHANOWA ① : Matcha Basics - Table top serving

(13 and 27 April, 11 and 25 May, 2024, from 13:00-14:10)

Ochadozo.com is delighted to present our Japanese tea course series, “CHANOWA①: Matcha Basics: Table-top serving". The course comprises a 4-class series during four Saturday afternoons in April-May 2024, focusing on Matcha and Japanese tea topics.

Participants will learn to set up, use utensils, whisk, serve/drink, and wrap up, so that you can serve Matcha to your guests on your own in a table-top setting. Seasonality is an important theme throughout this course, with a focus on spring and early summer.

★Examples of topics covered:

Class 1 (2024-4-13) Matcha, utensil, and water handling | tea words e.g. 和敬清寂, 市中の山居 etc. | touch & feel (utensils) | whisking techniques

Class 2 (2024-4-27) To serve and to be served Matcha | tea words/concepts | touch & feel (tea bowls) | whisking

Class 3 (2024-5-11) Tea tasting practice | tea words/concepts | touch & feel (Matcha and tea sweets) | whisking

Class 4 (2024-5-25) Tea session and host/guest role play | tea words/concepts | whisking

Our classes aim to be hands-on and interactive! During each class, guests will whisk and drink their own bowl(s) of Matcha and continually refine techniques. In the final session, participants will be the host(s) and guests of our in-class tea party.

About Yuki: Ms. Yuki Futami, a Japanese who lives in Hong Kong, has been practicing the Japanese way of tea (Chado) in the past 14 years, and is certified by the Nihoncha Instructor Association (Japan) as tea instructor and Japanese tea ambassador in Hong Kong. Since 2017, Yuki has been invited to perform tea demonstrations at corporate and public events in Hong Kong (see web links below). Yuki wishes to share the unique Japanese tea cultural experience with guests in fun and interactive events.

Spring tea gathering - I : Matcha Basics

25 March 2023: Matcha & Japanese Tea Film Screening

We are so delighted to be presenting this tea + film in-person event at the wonderful playground.work co-working space. This event will comprise two parts.

Many thanks to Director Takatsu san and playground.work for their support!

Part 1 (15:00-15:30): Japanese tea introduction and Matcha whisking by Ms. Yuki Futami. We start with a brief introduction of how different kinds of Japanese tea (Sencha, Gyokuro, Hojicha, Tencha/Matcha) are made. Each guest will then whisk and drink a bowl of Matcha together with Okashi (Japanese sweets).

Part 2 (15:30-16:30): We will watch "Gochiso Chaji - A Film About Japanese Tea" by Makoto Takatsu (2021, 52 minutes, Japanese with English subtitles), a documentary film which tells stories of tea growers, blenders, retailers, tea shop owners, and others involved in Japanese tea, how they became passionate about what they do, and the opportunities and challenges they face. From real voices of Japanese tea practitioners.
